WHAT IS SEO by Debra Lopez Public RelationsWhat is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization, better known as SEO, is the “process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s unpaid results.”  These results are often referred to as “natural” or “organic” results.

Why do I need SEO?

If your company depends on customers, then SEO is critical for your business.  In this day and age, there are very few businesses visited, or any purchase made without some level of “googling”.  Google has become a fundamental piece in the world of the digital economy.

Where do I start?

In order to get your business ranked in 2016, it’s imperative that your foundation is in place.  No matter what type of business you have – from product lines to restaurants to veterinarians – increasing your visibility on the web, and Google, is an effective tool for lead generation.

KEYWORDS:

Before doing any work, research.  Imagine you are the consumer searching (“googling”) for a product or service.  What would you type in? Those words are your KEYWORDS.

Each and every type of business can be found on the internet by using specific key words. These words vary, depending on the type of business you’re in.   If you don’t find your company on the first page of the search results – you have some work to do!  Having solid keyword foundation to boost your visibility is crucial for your success.

WEB PAGE OPTIMIZATION:

If you want Google to crawl your web page and link it with the keywords you’d like to rank for, you must optimize your website!  Simple, must haves are:

  1. Have a keyword in your url.
  2. H1 and H2 (Header 1 and Header 2) tags are properly placed.
  3. Images have alt tags.
  4. Keywords are found in content at least once.
  5. Title contains keyword.
  6. Meta description contains keyword.

Keep in mind, these are the MINIMUM requirements for Google to “read” your website.  Website ranking and SEO are not an overnight process.  Search engines have millions of sites to check, so be patient and continue to optimize!
