What is SEO Algorithm?

seo algorithmSEO algorithm? What is that? Unless you’re immersed in the digital world, the last time you heard the word algorithm was probably in high school math. And, like most high school math, you’ve probably forgotten what it means.

By definition, an algorithm is a process or set of rules to be followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations, especially by a computer. Sounds simple enough, right? Wrong. Becoming an algorithm guru is a never ending task. In the information era, what was relevant yesterday may not be today…which is why we have a constantly changing indexing process. There is no fool proof set of instructions on how to make your website rank number one on every search engine.

But there are steps you can take to get there.

Search engine algorithms allow billions of pages, filled with limitless content, to be scanned and ordered based on identifiers that you (as the SEO expert) provide on your website. Sounds easy enough….as long as you know what those algorithms are looking for.

To limit feeling completely lost and overwhelmed, we recommend starting with the following “less changeables” – the core processes every website should have for optimal search engine results.

  1. Content. What keywords do you want to rank for? What relevant information are you trying to share with the world? Knowing the answer to these questions is imperative when writing content for a website. Choose your keywords based on what users will likely search to read the content you have written. Expert tip: Include metadata in photos and use H1 and H2 headings.
  2. Links. Who do you want to be associated with online? What reputable site can provide support or references for the information you are providing? Links create a relationship between brands as much as content. Before using a link, it’s crucial to make sure the site can be trusted. Expert tip: Use an online link monitoring tool to keep track of links affiliated with your website.
  3. Mobile. Gone are the days of only surfing the web on your desktop computer. Everyone has a computer in their pocket. All of the top 100 most visible domains have mobile-friendly solutions, according to SearchMetrics. Expert tip: If you are in the process of converting to a responsive website, Google suggests you wait to launch it until it is completely finished.

Still not getting any results? Be patient. Ranking higher in search engines is not an overnight process. In addition to our list, search engine algorithms rate how many people are visiting your site, how long users stay on your page, broken links, irrelevant content and the list goes on and on.
